Artificial Lift

The only way to bring a liquid from below the surface of the earth to the surface of the earth is through the pressure, either natural or artificial, behind the product. This pressure pushes the liquid upward, fighting the natural pull of gravity. Once the pressure has dropped to a point that is no longer sufficient to create the lift needed, whether through depletion or liquification, there becomes a need to increase the lift in order to deliver the gas, oil or water to the surface. This supplemental pressure is called artificial lift.

This supplemental lift is created through the use of a subsurface hydraulic pump, which receives pressurized power fluid through the well bore, and propels it with greater force to the bottom of the reservoir, thereby increasing and improving the pressure, which then forces the liquid to the surface.
